Are You Ready for the Adventure?
We’re really excited to bring a new-to-us route to our bikepacking series as we cruise towards the end of summer! We’ll be heading over to the White Mountains to do a shortened version of Forest Radarian’s Lobo Lupes Loop that Kurt Refsnider and Kate Boyle designed. It’s 139miles and 12,288 feet of climbing (and descending) into pure joy.
Notes: Some of these details will change (starting/camping spot) and the route will be updated with campfing spots, water and points of interests The plan is to park/camp the night before(Thursday night) either at KP Cienega Campground or near Hannigan Lodge starting point so well be ready to ride at 8:30am. We will drop a pin of an exact camping/meeting/starting point soon. We’ll ride about 60 miles from our starting point and camp out at Blue River Crossing, hopefully right by the nice river there. The second day has a resupply in Alpine (about 22 miles in) and we will ride a little passed big lake for a total of 50 some odd miles with a fair amount of climbing to camp for night 2. Day 3 is a climb back to where we started. Please make absolutely sure you have the capacity to carry enough water to ride 40-60 miles – that means 3 litre minimum if you plan on filtering and 5+ litres if you don’t plan on filtering – we have Ortlieb Water Bags in a few sizes, tons of stem bag options, as well as Sawyer Filters available for purchase in the shop!
This ride is advanced bikepacking with challenging terrain and lots of climbing. We recommend a mountain bike set up tubeless with 2.4-2.6″ tires or a minimum of 2.2″ tires. You can read about what to expect here: https://bikepackingroots.org/project/el-lobo-lupus/
Ride Pace is ride at your own comfortable pace! This is not a race. We generally ride at a party pace, which means stopping when you need to and lots of meetups so we can re-group and enjoy the scenery together. Campfire Cycling will always have a mechanic at the back of the ride so no one is “stuck” alone at the back or incase a mechanical issue come up.
Anticipate Temperatures to range from: 40 degrees (or slightly below) at night to low 70’s during the day.
We will be recreating on the traditional lands of the Western Apache, White Mountain Apache and Pueblo peoples. Please respect the land and the people and leave no trace as we travel through.
We will be contacting everyone who signs up for the ride to make sure they are prepared for the challenge. Please sign up if you plan on joining us.
