Overview

Our inspiring overview is coming soon. For now, here is what SOL has to say:

The SOL Escape™ Bivvy is nothing less than a revolution in backcountry shelters. The complaint with most ultra-light emergency shelters is the same: condensation builds up inside as you get warm, leaving your clothes soaking wet. With the Escape™ Bivvy, condensation is no longer an issue, and you never again have to choose between staying dry and staying warm. The proprietary fabric lets moisture escape at the same time that it keeps rain, snow, and wind on the outside – all while reflecting your body heat back to you. Waterproof seams plus a drawstring hood closure and side zip mean you can seal out the elements entirely or use the bivvy like a traditional sleeping bag. The low-visibility OD Green color with repeating black logos is ideal for those times when survival means you don’t want to be seen.

Features

Our in-depth features analysis are forthcoming. For now, here is how Sol puts it:

  • A bivvy that BREATHES. Stay warm AND dry in the original backcountry emergency shelter that stays dry while you heat up.
  • Weather the Elements. Highly water-resistant fabric keeps you dry even in wet, soggy conditions.
  • Stay Warm. Reflects 70% of radiated body heat.
  • All-season Durability. Hard-wearing fabric resists punctures and tears through heavy use.
  • Low-visibility OD Green exterior. Makes it easy to blend into your environment.

It did the job, but condensation is still a problem

The temperature was set to drop below freezing outside of Sonoita during our ride of the Sky Islands Odyssey East Loop. My sleeping bag was pushing a decade and I had long since forgotten if it was rated at 15 F, or 30 F. I needed something to add a bit of warmth without adding too much weight or taking up too much space. Adding the bivvy did keep me warm. I made it through the night without even having to wear my puffer inside my sleeping bag. Some of my friends without bivvys did not have a good night. Most troublesome to my sleep was worrying that my sleeping bag would get too damp. When I woke up in the middle of the night, there was a significant layer of frost at the top part of my bag. To be fair, it was a humid night and frost covered everything. Still, there was some moisture throughout the inside of the bivvy, not just the top part near where I was breathing. Ultimately, any moisture that had soaked into my bag dried when I laid it out to dry in the sun when we stopped for lunch at Kentucky Camp. Others in our group had problems with condensation from their (fancier) bivvys as well, and I know condensation is a persistent problem with many bivvys. For a short trip, this bivvy added some comfort and peace of mind for cowboy camping in a cold desert climate. The price of that warmth is a bit of dampness and I'd worry about it over consecutive cold nights if the sleeping bag didn't have a chance to dry. The sack doesn't claim to be waterproof, and I'd worry a bit about it under actual rain.
