With gas prices slamming motorists, two-wheeled means of travel are starting to get a lot more attention these days.

Nationwide, people are purchasing bicycles in record numbers. And motorized scooters — some of which get more than 80 miles per gallon — are gaining in popularity as well.

“Ever since gas prices have gone up, we’ve been selling more scooters than we ever have before,” said Norm Weaver, owner of Beachside Scooters in Cape Canaveral. “It just beats the hell out of getting in your car and starting that big dog up.”

In August, Weaver said he sold six scooters, ranging in price from $1,100 to $5,000. Normally, he would sell one or two a month.

Ed Kope, 23, of Cocoa Beach, recently purchased a red-and-black Aventa 50 cubic centimeter scooter for $2,300 at Beachside Scooters, mainly, he said, “because of skyrocketing gas prices.”
