Overview

Minimalist tread patterns sure roll fast on a pair of sleek summer tires, up until you try navigating a slippery route covered in gloopy mud with them. The Rutland is Teravail’s mud-specific tire that thrives in “muddy gravel” and conditions that would bog down and overwhelm other tires.

The Rutland is available in a range of widths for both 700c (38mm and 42mm) and 650b wheels (47mm). The treads on these monster gravel tires are thick and knobby with directional, aggressive shoulder and transition lugs that are widely spaced to aid mud shedding. This tread pattern helps the Rutland corner excellently over loose gravel, shed mud, and offer much-needed grip when you’re leaning a bike into turns covered by mud or even peanut butter! Like all of Terravail’s tire offerings, you have the option of Light and Supple which comes with a weight saving of about 100g per tire over the Durable Bead-to-Bead which is the obvious choice when you’re riding “puncture ahoy!” terrain.

Teravail’s Rutland is rugged, chunky and just an overall monster of a gravel tire designed to be ridden on mud and slop. Paired with any bike offering reasonable clearance, these are the kind of tires that will not permit bad weather to sneak up and hijack your ride plans.

So far so good...

42mm on a 20 GT Grade- Gravel, fire roads, mixed. Definitely a more aggressive tire than I am used to, but dry SoCal “gravel” is pretty slippery. Not as supple as a GK SK- but more gnar and I suspect more durable.
