Teravail Cumberland

Just like another industry we all know about, inches matter a whole lot and in ours, the 2.6-inch  tire width has slowly gained popularity for trail riders. Teravail’s Cumberland is larger in volume than a traditional 29er tire but not quite a typical ‘fat-tire’ size. Labels aside, these girthy tires will leave you 2.6″-curious.

Overview

Just like another industry we all know about, inches matter a whole lot and in ours, the 2.6-inch  tire width has slowly gained popularity for trail riders. Teravail’s Cumberland is larger in volume than a traditional 29er tire but not quite a typical ‘fat-tire’ size. Labels aside, these girthy tires will leave you 2.6″-curious.

Teravail’s Cumberland is offered in both 27.5” x 2.8” and 29” x 2.6” widths. Ready for the rough stuff, it is made of durable woven aramid fibers (twice as strong as Kevlar, and lighter in weight) that reinforce the tread and sidewall. The Cumberland’s minimalist center tread pattern might leave you thinking it was designed for gravel or cross country riding but, the size on its side lugs reveal that it can handle backcountry trails. The aggressive side lugs are designed to maximize cornering stability on a 35mm rim and balance out the smaller center knobs that make the tire roll fast. There may be a bit of a fitting issue since most  29ers were built to fit standard 29×2.2-2.4 tires, so 2.6” may be too tight a squeeze.

Teravail just keeps on giving and this time, Plus riders have their wish: a wide trail tire for backcountry bikepacking that is just below the 3″ plus tire range. Thick but not fat, this is a tire size that has left us intrigued.
